Profile
The story
Zenyatta developed on a timetable that differed sharply from many champions. John Shirreffs did not start her until late in her three-year-old season. After three early victories, Mike Smith became her regular rider, and their patient partnership defined the rest of her career. Zenyatta typically settled far behind the pace, sometimes after a slow break, then used an unusually sustained closing run to pass entire fields.
In 2008 she went unbeaten in seven starts and captured the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. A year later, connections chose the Breeders' Cup Classic rather than defend that title. Facing accomplished male runners, she advanced from last and became the first filly or mare to win the Classic. Zenyatta returned at six and extended her streak to nineteen. Her perfect record ended only in her twentieth and final start, when Blame held her by a nose in the 2010 Classic. Voters recognized the full campaign by naming her Horse of the Year.
Editorial analysis
Why this horse matters
Zenyatta broadened the public idea of what dominance can look like. Her victories depended on rhythm, traffic management, acceleration, and sustained speed after conceding early ground. She also crossed conventional boundaries by winning the Breeders' Cup Classic against males and returning at six. The nineteen-race streak spanned four seasons, multiple distances, and synthetic and dirt surfaces. Her final near-miss helps explain the recurring difficulty of her running style rather than diminishing the record.

Reading the record
Research context
Technical and historical notes, presented as context rather than instruction.
Her 2008 and 2009 Breeders' Cup races were on a synthetic surface; the 2010 Classic was on Churchill Downs dirt.
First female Breeders' Cup Classic winner is supported; subjective greatest-ever claims remain editorial opinion, not database fact.
Narrow margins should be read alongside pace shape and her repeated late-running style.
